The product mentioned, “Scale 00 DJH Models LTD no. 147 steam locomotive 2-8-2 P2 ‘Wolf of Badenoch’ of the LNER #P329,” is a scale model (00 scale, 1:76) of a historic British steam locomotive from the interwar period. In reality it concerns the LNER Class P2, a series of powerful 2-8-2 “Mikado” steam locomotives that were specially developed for heavy express services in Scotland on the Edinburgh–Aberdeen route.

The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) had the P2 class designed under the direction of Sir Nigel Gresley, one of the most influential British locomotive designers. The aim was to deploy locomotives with very high tractive effort and stable running, suitable for the challenging routes in the north of Great Britain, where heavy trains and relatively tight curve radii coincided. The 2-8-2 wheel arrangement (two leading wheels, eight driving wheels, two trailing wheels) reflects this task: many powered axles for grip and power, with leading and trailing axles for guidance at higher speeds.

Within this class the locomotives were given names closely connected with Scottish places and titles. The name “Wolf of Badenoch” refers to the historical nickname of Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan (14th century), who in Scottish history is known as the “Wolf of Badenoch.” This naming underscored the Scottish character of their deployment and the prestige that LNER attributed to these express locomotives.

Historically, the P2 locomotives were famous for their performance, but they were also known as complex to maintain and sensitive to the limitations of certain line sections. In the course of the 1940s and 1950s, the remaining locomotives of the P2 class were rebuilt by Edward Thompson within the British railways organization (after the grouping and later nationalization) into Pacifics (2-6-2), Class A2/2. This radical rebuild changed the appearance and running characteristics significantly and effectively meant the end of the original P2 configuration. The original P2 locomotives were eventually withdrawn and scrapped in the 1950s; no original example in its original form survived.

The DJH Models product in 00 scale is thus a miniature representation of an iconic, but vanished British express locomotive from the LNER period, recognizable by the imposing 2-8-2 wheel arrangement and the historically charged name “Wolf of Badenoch,” which links the locomotive to the Scottish history within which it ran its principal services.
